Placement into First Year Composition

Students are placed into ENA / G 101 using either their SAT, ACT or New York State Regents scores, or the CUNY Proficiency Placement Index (PPI), into one of the following types of sections:

·   a credit-bearing first-semester composition course (ENG 101);

·   an accelerated/credit-bearing remedial course (ENA 101);

·   the CUNY Start program or a LaGuardia-based FYIP course

The PPI score is determined based on the following factors: high school GPA, English Regents score, and SAT or ACT score—to determine the likelihood of success in the credit-bearing English course without additional support:

•         65 and above places a student into ENG 101

•         0-64 places a student into ENA 101

NOTE: LaGuardia serves students from three area high schools (Energy Tech, Middle College, and International High School).  For Early College Students (high school students who are also enrolled for an Associate Degree):

  • 75 or above on the New York State English Regents exam places a student into ENG 101
  • Passing the Regents with 65-74 and a C grade in English courses places a student into ENA 101
